We Mexicans are proud of the craftsmanship, heritage and flavour of our homeland that is distilled in 100% agave tequila and mezcal; we believe that a Mexican microcosm travels in every bottle
Mexico's Story
But tequila and mezcal are caught up in a classic case of David and Goliath. The smallest distilleries, producing some of the world’s best 100% agave spirits, have not yet had the opportunity to put their products on the world stage.
These small producers lack the time, money and know-how to crack the global market, so they simply concentrate on doing what they know best – making world-class spirits.
Tequila y Soledad is changing that: it’s time to taste the tequilas Mexicans drink.
By giving the best independent distilleries in Mexico a platform to introduce their 100% agave products to the European market, we are able to put tequila and mezcal on the same shelves, menus and tables as the best whisky and gin in the world. Where it deserves to be.
Our stake in Europe
Founded and curated by Berlin’s most passionate tequila proponent, Alonso Lopez Mota-Velasco, Tequila y Soledad is the perfect one-stop online shop for anyone seeking to discover and taste the best selection of 100% agave tequilas and mezcales in Europe.
Alonso’s pride in his Mexican roots and culture, combined with his passion for his adoptive home, Berlin, led to the idea of introducing Europe to the real spirit of Mexico – through the tequilas and mezcales Mexicans know and love.
After scouting out and tasting hundreds of independently produced 100% agave spirits, Alonso has personally curated Tequila y Soledad’s selection to ensure we only bring you the most delicious, pure and exotic tasting spirits of the highest quality.
Forget the image of Mexico you’ve formed from the news, you’ll find no politics or sombreros here. Tequila y Soledad’s sole intention is to enable sophisticated and adventurous European drinkers to put their salt-shot-lime days behind them and discover world class agave spirits, with all their complexity, variety and generosity of flavour.
As well as filling your glass with the best spirits Mexico has to offer, we also aim to fill your mind with information about the agave universe via our Blog. Our Team
Alonso Lopez Mota-Velasco
(Founder)
Born and raised in Mexico’s central highlands, Alonso moved to Germany over a decade ago, but his pride in his Mexican homeland has remained strong. Alonso’s ancestors used to produce mezcal on their family hacienda, and thanks to his historic connection and knowledge of mezcal production from an early age, Alonso’s passion for fine agave spirits is as inspiring as it is infectious.
Having spent years visiting independent distilleries, studying production methods and enjoying many dramatically different tequilas and mescales, Alonso’s desire to share his love of Mexican craftsmanship and introduce Europeans to delicious agave spirits led him to found Tequila y Soledad in 2016.
As well as directing the business and managing the website, Alonso is responsible for curating and sourcing Tequila y Soledad’s spirit collection. Having managed a marketing team for more than five years, Alonso’s experience has given him the expertise to secure Mexico’s best tequilas and mescals the recognition they deserve in Europe.
Caroline Stephenson
(Co-Founder)
Caroline developed a love of Mexican culture, spirits and cuisine during a visit to the country in 2010. With a background in PR and marketing she is in her element when learning and talking about Latino and Mexican culture, agave-based cocktails and stories of the remarkable craftsmen and woman behind the production of the spirits
Jacques Rott
(Web Developer)
As our resident technology expert, Jacques looks after everything that goes on behind the scenes on our website. Like all good Frenchmen, Jacques is a drinks connoisseur, although he didn’t discover agave spirits until he moved to Berlin in 2013.
However, his learning curve has been steep and he has now come to recognise and appreciate that the difference in each distillation makes it as unique as a bottle of French wine.”
